PROBLEM
Modern urbanization and tourism development are rapidly encroaching on Bali’s natural landscapes, displacing traditional ecosystems and community spaces. Jiwa Garden’s mission—and the heart of Memijak Jiwa—addresses this issue by shedding light on how green spaces are increasingly threatened by short-lived trends, concrete expansion, and neglect of sustainable practices. As vital habitats are lost and cultural roots are disrupted, the documentary explores the pressing need to prioritize sustainable development, preserve natural areas, and foster a renewed sense of community to protect the environment that sustains us all.
PARTS OF The POEM:
what are we building?
cages of concrete that trap the bees and butterflies
fences that evict ancient roots from their bedrooms —
for trends that have 3 years on their shelf life
or habitats that have provided us with food through the ages?
PARTS OF THE POEM:
and here in nature,
seeing how bees pollinate blooming flowers,
how our waste can turn into food for soil,
the earth reminds us that our lives and cultures
can live in mutual connections —
can coexist beyond our bubbles,
and we can blend to build together
— a collective space that fill in our gaps.
